Cheap Trick at Budokan - 30th Anniversary Edition [DVDRip]

In 1978, the four guys from Rockford (IL) known collectively as Cheap Trick would become Rocks next big hit by playing multiple nights at Japans Nippon Budokan Arena in Tokyo. Up until then, Cheap Trick was a popular curiosity in the US but had grown an already plentiful fan base in Japan. In their multiple Sold Out shows at Budokan, they put on a spirited set of shows that prompted their label to release a truncated collection of the best performances in Japan only. Eventually, the album became a desirable import in the US, eventually catapulting the band into the bright spotlights that only the best enjoyed at that time. Soon after, the previously Gold albums soon became Platinum as more fans began to explore their past catalogue. And Cheap Trick, the phenomenon was born.

On the albums 30th Anniversary, Epic assembles a lustrous and historical Box that details completely, that eventful phase of Cheap Tricks career by not only re-mastering the previously expanded album released in 1998 (originally, the 1978 LP album had 10 tracks. The 20th Anniversary Edition (1998) expanded to 19 performance tracks) over 2 CDs, but also releasing a DVD of the Friday night show (April 30, 1978).

The DVD of this four-disc package is the first commercial release of the 15-song Japanese television broadcast that was aired only once in Japan. Shown only once before, 30 years ago on Japanese TV, the DVD is the visual complement to the April 28th CD. Shot with multiple cameras and professional production values, youll see the band take the stage and then rip through their nearly 80-minute set. Cheap Trick are almost as fun to watch as they are to hear. Nielsen looks like a cross between Peter Boyle and Marty Feldman (the ultimate Frankenstein?) and is frenetic as he bounces from one end of the stage to the other, tipping his cap and mugging at the crowd. Carlos, meanwhile, is as cool as the lead on a 70s cop show, smoking a cigarette while he runs through drum fills with hard-boiled nonchalance. As for Petersson and Zander, they simply play well and look pretty. In addition to concert footage, bonus features include two additional songs taped at Budokan in 2008 ("Voices" and "If You Want My Love"), as well as "Come On, Come On," from 1978 which was not included in the original broadcast, and a 2008 interview called "Looking Back." The DVD also includes a pristine new 5.1 Surround Sound mix.
